C4CC filed comments with the FCC yesterday pointing out the five fatal flaws with current cable regulation that harm consumers and stunt technological advances. The flaws should be no surprise to anyone who pays for cable. They are:
- Rising rates and stagnating quality
- Barriers to entry keep cable competitors out
- Small business bears the brunt with little access to cable
- Programming access to special interest and minority consumers is limited
- The consumer video market is the victim of technological paralysis
Vigorous competition is the antidote to these flaws. Cable companies respond to competitive pressure – they already have increased their Internet speeds where the competition is encroaching. On the topic of technological advances, think about the wireless telephone industry. Most markets have several competitors vying for consumers’ business. They offer a variety of price plans, a variety of equipment and the come out with new products and services all the time. With cable they may give you a few channels -- new channels chosen by them, not the consumer. Read our comments and our press release.
If only Congress would let it happen, a technological explosion is on the horizon and consumers stand to benefit greatly. Send a letter to your member of congress to help make it happen.
I competely agree with these principles. There has been no innovation other than raising rates to new highs with limited options for programming. JC
